    Polyethyleneglycol octylphenyl ether, commonly known as Triton X-100, is a nonionic surfactant with a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol chain and a hydrophobic octylphenyl group. Its chemical structure provides excellent surface-active properties, making it highly effective as a detergent, emulsifier, and wetting agent. Its primary application is as a laboratory detergent for solubilizing proteins and membranes in biochemical research, and as an industrial surfactant in cleaning formulations. In the pharmaceutical field, it serves as a solubilizing agent and emulsifier in topical and oral formulations. Its ability to disrupt lipid bilayers makes it a standard tool for cell lysis and protein extraction. Triton X-100 is also used in the formulation of paints, coatings, and household cleaners. Due to environmental concerns regarding its degradation product, 4-tert-octylphenol, its use is being restricted in some regions, though it remains a widely available and versatile industrial chemical.
