It is extensively used as a key reagent for the preparation of nucleoside phosphoramidites, which are crucial building blocks in the automated solid-phase synthesis of oligonucleotides (DNA/RNA). Additionally, it finds use in the synthesis of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and flame retardants. Due to its high reactivity, especially with water and alcohols, it must be handled under anhydrous conditions, typically in a glove box or using Schlenk techniques.
