    Product Description:
Sultamicillin tosylate is the tosylate salt form of sultamicillin. Sultamicillin itself is a double ester prodrug, specifically a mutual prodrug, which combines ampicillin (a β-lactam antibiotic) and sulbactam (a β-lactamase inhibitor) through a methylene group. Upon oral administration and subsequent hydrolysis in the body, it releases both active components in equimolar amounts. Its primary and definitive application is as an antibacterial agent. The released ampicillin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while sulbactam irreversibly inhibits many β-lactamase enzymes, thereby protecting ampicillin from degradation and extending its spectrum of activity against β-lactamase-producing bacteria. It is used clinically to treat various infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues. As an established active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), it is also relevant in pharmaceutical analysis and quality control. The tosylate salt form or related compounds may be used as reference standards or impurity standards during the manufacturing and regulatory testing of sultamicillin-based drug products.
