    Product Description:
Strychnine hemisulfate salt is the sulfate salt form of strychnine, a highly toxic alkaloid naturally found in the seeds of *Strychnos nux-vomica*. It is a white crystalline powder. The compound is a potent antagonist of glycine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, primarily at the postsynaptic spinal cord and brainstem. Historically, strychnine and its salts were used in very low doses as a stimulant and tonic in medicine. However, due to its extremely narrow therapeutic index and high toxicity, its medical use has been largely abandoned. Its primary contemporary relevance in the pharmaceutical industry is as a reference standard or impurity standard for analytical purposes, such as in HPLC or mass spectrometry, to ensure the quality and safety of related products or to study its toxicology. Strychnine poisoning is characterized by violent convulsions and respiratory failure. The salt form is used in research to study glycine receptor function and the mechanisms of convulsant agents. It is strictly controlled and handled with extreme caution in laboratory settings.
