Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, CAS 60-00-4) is a polyamino carboxylic acid with the formula [CH_N(CH_CO_H)_]_. It is a white, crystalline powder that acts as a hexadentate ligand, forming stable, water-soluble complexes with most metal ions (e.g., Ca__, Mg__, Fe__, Pb__) through its four carboxylate and two amine groups. Its primary industrial application is as a chelating agent in cleaning products, water treatment, and industrial processes to sequester metal ions that cause hardness, scaling, or catalytic degradation. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, it serves as a multifunctional excipient, primarily used as a stabilizer, preservative enhancer, and metal ion scavenger to prevent discoloration and rancidity in formulations. It is also widely used in biochemical research to inhibit metalloproteases and in analytical chemistry for complexometric titrations.
