    Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is a cyclic siloxane with the formula [(CH3)2SiO]4. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a mild odor. It is a key monomer and intermediate in the silicone industry. Its primary application is as a monomer for the production of polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), which are widely used in silicone oils, rubbers, resins, and sealants. It also serves as a carrier fluid, lubricant, and release agent in various industrial and consumer applications, including personal care products (e.g., in hair and skin care formulations as a volatile conditioning agent) and as a component in cleaning products. D4 is considered a high-production-volume chemical. It is subject to regulatory scrutiny due to concerns regarding its persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and environmental toxicity, particularly to aquatic organisms.
