    Product Description:
7-Dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC, CAS 434-16-2) is a zoosterol and a biosynthetic precursor of cholesterol. Structurally, it is a derivative of cholesterol featuring a double bond at the C7 position in the B-ring. It is naturally found in the skin and other tissues of animals. Its primary biological significance lies in its role as the immediate precursor to vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation from sunlight, the B-ring of 7-DHC undergoes photolysis to form previtamin D3, which then thermally isomerizes to vitamin D3. This makes 7-DHC a critical compound in endocrine and metabolic health, particularly for calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism. In research and pharmaceutical contexts, it is used as a standard for studying vitamin D synthesis, cholesterol metabolism disorders (e.g., Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome), and as a raw material for the industrial production of vitamin D3.
