    Latanoprost free acid is the active carboxylic acid metabolite of latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2α analog. It is a synthetic prostanoid characterized by a cyclopentane ring structure with hydroxyl and ketone groups, and a long-chain carboxylic acid tail. This compound is the pharmacologically active form generated in vivo after the isopropyl ester prodrug (latanoprost) is hydrolyzed. The primary and definitive application of latanoprost free acid is in ophthalmology as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). It functions as a potent prostaglandin receptor (FP receptor) agonist, effectively reducing intraocular pressure (IOP). Its main therapeutic use is for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, where it increases the outflow of aqueous humor through the uveoscleral pathway. As the key active moiety, it is central to the drug's mechanism and efficacy.
