This compound is primarily used as a precursor for the synthesis of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and silicon-based materials. It serves as a key reagent in sol-gel processes for producing high-purity silica films, coatings, and nanoparticles under mild conditions. Its applications extend to surface modification, where it acts as a silylating agent to impart hydrophobic properties to materials, and as a cross-linking agent in silicone polymers. Additionally, it functions as a versatile reagent in organic synthesis, particularly for the protection of hydroxyl groups and as a source of the trimethylsilyl (TMS) group.
