Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether (DPGME, CAS 34590-94-8) is a mixture of isomers, primarily 1-(2-methoxypropoxy)-2-propanol and 1-(2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol. It is a colorless, low-odor liquid with excellent solvency properties for a wide range of resins, oils, and dyes, coupled with low volatility and high water miscibility. Its primary industrial applications are as a solvent and coalescing agent. In the coatings and paints industry, it is extensively used in water-based formulations, such as latex paints, to aid in film formation by temporarily plasticizing polymer particles. It also serves as a solvent in cleaners, inks, and agricultural chemical formulations. Furthermore, DPGME finds use as a chemical intermediate and a component in functional fluids. Due to its favorable toxicological profile compared to some other glycol ethers, it is often chosen as a safer alternative in various formulations. However, standard safety precautions for handling organic solvents should always be observed.
