    Product Description:
Sodium deoxycholate is a bile acid salt, specifically the sodium salt of deoxycholic acid. It is an anionic, amphipathic detergent derived from cholic acid. Its structure features a rigid steroid nucleus with a hydrophilic side chain terminating in a carboxylate group, which confers its potent surface-active properties. Its primary application is in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. In drug formulation, it serves as a solubilizing agent, emulsifier, and absorption enhancer for poorly water-soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). In biochemical research, it is extensively used as a biological detergent for cell lysis and membrane protein solubilization due to its ability to disrupt lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions while maintaining protein function. It is also a key component in certain cell culture media and diagnostic reagents. Beyond its role as an excipient and research reagent, sodium deoxycholate has direct therapeutic applications. It is approved as an injectable drug (e.g., Kybella) for the non-surgical reduction of submental fat, where it acts as a cytolytic agent to destroy fat cells. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for certain food uses and is subject to pharmacopeial standards (e.g., USP, Ph. Eur.) for pharmaceutical grade material.
