    Product Description:
Pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC), with the CAS number 26299-14-9, is an orange-yellow solid complex formed from pyridine, chromium trioxide, and hydrochloric acid. It is a widely used and versatile oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. Its primary and most significant application is the selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones. This reaction typically proceeds under mild conditions (room temperature) in aprotic solvents like dichloromethane, and it avoids over-oxidation to carboxylic acids, which is a common issue with many other oxidants. PCC is particularly valuable for converting sensitive alcohols that might decompose under harsher conditions. While effective, PCC contains hexavalent chromium, which is toxic and a known environmental hazard. Its use requires careful handling and proper waste disposal. Due to these concerns, numerous alternative, often chromium-free, oxidizing agents have been developed for similar transformations in modern laboratories.
