    Tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) is a quaternary ammonium salt with the chemical formula (C₄H₉)₄N⁺Br⁻. It is a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and many organic solvents. Its key structural feature is the large, lipophilic tetrabutylammonium cation paired with a bromide anion. Its primary and most significant application is as a versatile phase-transfer catalyst (PTC) in organic synthesis. The tetrabutylammonium cation facilitates the transfer of anionic reactants from an aqueous or solid phase into an organic phase, dramatically accelerating reactions between ionic and non-ionic species. This makes TBAB indispensable for nucleophilic substitution reactions, alkylations, oxidations, and polymerizations. Beyond catalysis, it serves as an electrolyte in electrochemistry and as a template or structure-directing agent in the synthesis of materials like zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
