    Product Description:
N,N'-Dibenzylethylenediamine is an organic compound featuring a central ethylenediamine core with a benzyl group attached to each nitrogen atom. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid or low-melting solid with a characteristic amine odor. It is commonly used as a free base or to form salts with various acids. Its primary and most significant application is in the pharmaceutical industry as a key intermediate. It is notably used in the synthesis of the antibiotic benzathine, where it reacts with penicillin G to form the long-acting, poorly soluble salt benzathine penicillin (benzathine benzylpenicillin). This salt form allows for sustained release of the antibiotic upon intramuscular injection. Beyond this, it serves as a versatile building block in organic synthesis, particularly for constructing more complex amine-containing molecules, ligands, or as a phase-transfer catalyst precursor. The compound should be handled with care as it is corrosive and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage. It is also harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Proper personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye/face protection, is essential when working with this material.
