It is a reddish-brown to black solid, insoluble in water, and widely used as a precursor for synthesizing various iron-based functional nanomaterials, including magnetic nanoparticles, catalysts, and pigments. Its primary applications are in the materials and industrial sectors. As a key precursor in materials chemistry, it is used to produce ferrites, magnetic recording media, and polishing agents for glass and metals. In the functional chemicals domain, it serves as a major inorganic pigment (Pigment Red 101 and Pigment Brown 6) for paints, coatings, plastics, and construction materials, providing color and UV protection. It is also employed as a catalyst in chemical reactions, such as the Haber-Bosch process and water-gas shift reactions, and as a raw material for steelmaking and thermite welding.
