    Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), CAS 1119-94-4, is a quaternary ammonium salt with the chemical formula C₁₅H₃₄NBr. It is a cationic surfactant characterized by a long hydrophobic dodecyl chain and a positively charged trimethylammonium head group. Its primary application is as a cationic surfactant in various industrial and household formulations. It is widely used in fabric softeners, hair conditioners, and disinfectant cleaners due to its ability to adsorb onto negatively charged surfaces, providing softening, antistatic, and antimicrobial properties. In materials science, DTAB serves as a structure-directing agent or templating molecule in the synthesis of mesoporous silica materials (e.g., MCM-41) and for the surface functionalization of nanoparticles. DTAB is also employed as a phase-transfer catalyst in organic synthesis and as a denaturant in protein chemistry. It is generally considered a mild irritant to skin and eyes, and proper handling procedures should be followed.
