Cevimeline hydrochloride is a cholinergic agonist that acts as a muscarinic receptor agonist, specifically targeting the M1 and M3 subtypes. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder with the chemical name (2R)-2-[(1S)-1-methyl-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)ethyl]-5,6-dihydro-4H-thieno[2,3-b]thiopyran-4-one hydrochloride. Its primary and well-defined application is as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth) in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.
